At Home

“At Home” is part of my Internal Topographies series and is reminiscent of the homes where I lived in Argentina. The home that I was born in and my grandmother’s home are warm and welcoming places that I remember in moments of uncertainty and despair.

“At Home” is a true revelation. It can be interpreted as a landscape mirror, a relaxing environment, and a unique experience. This artwork is characteristic of bright and vivid blue and green colors. The artist shares a distinctive visual language that draws from her sense of freedom. When she is at home is when she feels most relaxed and in touch with herself. She feels secure in a body of water that suspends her body. She’s inviting us to visit her. Could we visit? This might be creating a paradox- because we are currently living in difficult times. Due to the pandemic, our homes have become our everyday living space. For fortunate ones, “Home”  is relaxing, “Home”  feels like a soothing body of water. However,  many humans are social beings. It is in our nature to communicate and have company. As Silvina states: “When the pandemic hit, the museum closed, and we were laid off. I realized that being by myself in my studio was not enough. I needed to connect with others, so I looked for opportunities online. I connected with the Jewish Arts” by celebrating the theme “light and hope.” This was an online opportunity to connect people due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Silvina represents our community as a whole, especially our artists, teachers, and Latins.

Hear from the artist herself:

This exhibit is an opportunity to acknowledge the effects of quarantine from COVID-19 in Hispanic populations. The pandemic has brought social and racial inequity concerning public health. It has highlighted that health equity is still not achieved. COVID-19 has unequally affected many Hispanics, putting them more at risk of getting sick and dying from COVID-19. Many factors, such as poverty and healthcare access, have a significant influence on people’s health and quality of life. It is incredibly important to create awareness to help develop this in the future.
