The Moon and the River

“The moon and the river” is a mixed media collage with recycled materials, pompoms, acrylic paint, ribbons from my father’s old store in Argentina, and a paper boat. The painting evokes a personal prayer to the land, a poem written with colors and textures to express the beauty and harmony that nature offers to us.

Silvina Mizrahi

With rich and bold colors, Silvina portrays a soothing image of the moon connected to the river in perfect harmony. The viewer feels the need to follow the path and go into this wonderful world.  How many times can we say we followed the river to the moon? Silvina has a way of morphing the environment, transforming and leaving the viewer to fill in the next frame. For the Moon in “The Moon and the River” the artist used a mat from an organic material, a  woven wicker plate. The river is made of cloth that dad had in his craft store from Argentina. This painting incorporates the artist’s childhood. The artist says: “Was it somewhere I went? I do not know, maybe”. It is interesting how she sees the world, which is different than how we understand the world.

Hear from the artist herself:

No sé, tal vez”.

This exhibit is an opportunity to acknowledge the housing environments in the Latino community. The physical infrastructure and housing make human interaction possible and provide shelter. The stability of the infrastructure has important implications for social equity and health. Populations in inadequate housing are more likely to have environmental diseases and injuries. Substantial disparities in housing have remained largely unchanged. Approximately 7.5% of Hispanic whites live in substandard housing. Segregation, lack of housing mobility, and homelessness are all associated with adverse health outcomes. Effective interventions should be implemented to reduce environmental health disparities related to housing.
